Sustainability Forecast for 2013

Anthony Clavien whole earthThe whole Earth and the people who inhabit it are fundamentally connected. If ever there was a time to come together, embrace the unmistakable changes that are taking place and get on board with a sustainability plan that makes sense, now is that time! Many of us strive to improve the current conditions everyday, knowing how important these issues are. Here are some of the hot topics to consider in regards to developing initiatives to fix the problems that already exist, while creating positive growth for our planet and it’s people.

Climate Change – the cascading impacts of climate change are here, there is no more denying it. Last year in the US alone, there were horrific wildfires, record-breaking heat waves, flooding, and of course new-level storms that left behind waves of devastation. For the first time ever, we are encountering the face of global warming up close and personal.

The Energy Problem – last year proved to be a transformative time regarding public opinion on the energy issues the world is facing. Public awareness of these issues has multiplied thanks to the media coverage of occurrences such as the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 and Deepwater Horizon in 2010. The issues and their enormity are becoming more and more clear, what remains uncertain is what to do about it. We have big problems and are taking steps that are simply too small.

Globalization – though there are many blessings associated with the trend of globalization, and there many changes still needed to address the very real challenges. When dealing with issues on such a massive scale, problem solving can be overwhelming and change can be slow.

Consider the following point of view expressed on EPA.com, “Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.” It is imperative for the long-term economic life in this world, for the journey that we are all taking together.
