Tour De Fat with Anthony Clavien – Celebrating Bikes, Beer, and Fun with a Side of Sustainability

Anthony Clavien Tour de FatTour De Fat may need a proper introduction to those who have never attended. Sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, Tour De Fat is a bicycle parade and festival that takes place in a variety of US cities! The bicycle motif of New Belgium Brewing’s flagship beer, Fat Tire, describes the entire mission of the event.  The main objective is to promote the message that not only is cycling a healthy hobby, but also a socially and environmentally sensible choice.

The Tour De Fat festival has celebrated 13 seasons of success, expanding into new cities as the subculture catches on all across the US. Included in the festival is music, beer, new circus acts, and of course BIKES (every type of bike you can imagine) parading through town. There is certainly no lack of eye candy, as all participants are encouraged to wear costumes. Don’t be surprised to find sparkly get-ups coupled with neon wigs or rhinestone encrusted spandex paired with a fedora hat while pedaling through the streets.

The crusader highlight of the tour takes place during the ceremonious car-for-bike-swap. In each city, a local participant becomes the star of the show as they hand over the title of their car to New Belgium Breweries, which is then auctioned with proceeds benefitting local cycling organizations. In exchange for handing over their car and pledging to live car-free for one year, they receive a $2,250 budget to a local bike shop to buy a commuter bike. What a great way to promote cycling and sustainability!
